Domestic vs Commercial Dehumidifiers

The Difference Between Commercial Portable Dehumidifiers and Domestic Dehumidifiers

If you are wondering why you should choose a commercial grade portable dehumidifier (still easily maneuverable) over a domestic one, here are some of the reasons. The points below refer to portable refrigerant dehumidifiers.

  1. Unlike residential dehumidifiers, these units remove a large volume of water per day and are effective in both small and large rooms.

From our research, one of the largest capacity domestic dehumidifiers on the market, will remove a maximum of 25L per day, whereas our portable dehumidifiers will remove up to 70L per day.

  2. Commercial Portable Dehumidifiers offer powerful, heavy duty pumps with a drain hose - giving you the freedom to drain water anywhere and saves you the stress of having to empty drain trays before they overflow.

  3. Our portable units offer a 5 metre vertical drain. Meaning you don’t have to be strategic in placing the dehumidifier near a doorway. Having a powerful pump means you can have your hose placed through a window half way up a wall and into the outdoor.

SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How big a dehumidifier do I need?

This is basically down to the size of the room and how wet it is. Larger dehumidifiers remove more water per energy dollar spent and run for fewer hours in a given space than smaller ones. The energy saving will almost certainly be greater than the difference in purchase price.

If we look at some of the standard domestic units, these can remove between 10 to 20 litres of water per day (don’t forget to empty the drain tray), depending on the temperature and humidity set. Our portable dehumidifiers remove up to 70 litres per day at 30° C and 80% relative humidity (RH) and includes a 5 metre drain hose.

How does a dehumidifier prevent mould and mildew?

A dehumidifier prevents mould and mildew growth in two ways. First it dries out the room, drawing damp from the contents and fabric of the room on which mould and mildew will inevitably form and prevents that damp from recurring. Secondly, providing the dehumidifier is set to maintain relative humidity at 50% or slightly below, the air is too dry for mould and mildew spores to develop. Fungi need airborne water as well as surface water to grow!

How does a dehumidifier work?

Refrigeration dehumidifiers work by drawing air from the room over a coil cooled to a very low temperature by a refrigeration system. The water vapor condenses on the cold surface and the liquid water drips into the water collection bucket underneath or from a drain hose.  The alternative method is desiccant dehumidifiers. A desiccant dehumidifier passes the air over a desiccant wheel (desiccant - a water absorbing material).  The water is removed from the desiccant by passing a stream of warm air through it whereby it is dried and re-generated to collect more moisture on its next rotation.

Which Dehumidifier Type Should I Get?

Refrigerant Dehumidifiers work best in spaces where the temperature is 20°C and above and humidity levels of 50% and above.

Desiccant Dehumidifiers achieve RH levels below 35% and perform exceptionally well when used in cooler temperatures, or when a low dew point is required. As there is no actual water produced during the process, these units can work effectively at sub-zero temperatures.
