Climate control in Pharmaceutical Manufacture

A large Australian pharmaceutical laboratory, manufacturing private label medicines and supplements came up against humidity control issues.

Essential for productivity, the packaging room needed to maintain a consistent and stable climate and humidity level in order to maintain the integrity of the powdered product.

CHALLANGE

Inconsistent indoor humidity caused hygroscopic powdered compounds to become gluey during the packaging stage.

SOLUTION

Humiscope selected, sourced, installed, and commissioned a TFT desiccant dehumidifier to produce and maintain a dry environment.  With moisture removal rates between 8.8 to 11.5 kg/h and dry air flow from 1,000 to 3,100 m3/hr.

OUTCOME

Using a Desiccant Dehumidifier, the humidity levels were set to eliminate moisture, keeping the powdered product completely dry which ensured the hygroscopic materials remained in the best possible consistency.

Production Challenges

When a packaging area runs between 40 – 50% Relative Humidity (RH) and above.  The high humidity in the area means the hygroscopic powder absorbs moisture and the fine powder turns gluey. 

Packaging lines had to stop intermittently to clean out the machines which caused production to slow down or stop completely.

Business Challenges

The constant interruptions and downtime caused by maintenance checks and removal of gluey compounds meant the manufacturing plant was unable to meet its client’s deadline.  Shipping postponements meant the product was delayed to market.  A serious business concern that needed to be rectified.

Less critical, yet still a consideration, was the increase in wage costs paid to select employees who needed to clean and maintain the packaging machines.
